Terms of Service
Last updated 5 November 2026
1. What Spill is
Spill is an app and website for keeping a shared ledger of what a group spends and who owes whom. Spill is open source software (AGPL-3.0). You can run it yourself on a server you control, or use Spill Cloud, the server we run.
These terms cover your use of the Spill apps and website and of Spill Cloud. If you use a server run by someone else, that server’s operator is responsible for it, and these terms do not make us a party to your arrangement with them.
2. Your account
You need an account on a server to use Spill. You are responsible for keeping your sign-in details safe and for what happens under your account. Give accurate details and tell us if you think someone else has got into your account.
You must be old enough to form a binding agreement where you live, or have a parent or guardian agree for you.
3. Your content
The groups, expenses, receipts and names you put into Spill are yours. You give us only the permission we need to store them and show them to the people you share a group with, so the service can work.
Anyone in a group can see what is in it. Only add information you are comfortable sharing with that group, and only add other people’s names with their agreement.
4. Using Spill properly
Do not use Spill to break the law, to harass anyone, to upload anything you have no right to share, to attack or overload the service, or to try to get at data that is not yours.
Spill is a tool for keeping track of money between people. It does not move money, hold funds, or give financial, tax or legal advice. Balances are only as correct as the entries that were typed in.
5. Free and Pro on Spill Cloud
Reading your groups, balances and history on Spill Cloud is free, always. Spill Cloud Pro is the paid plan for adding and changing data there.
When Pro is switched on for Spill Cloud, adding or editing expenses, payments, people, bank entries and receipts needs an active Pro plan: ₹49 per month or ₹499 per year, with equivalent prices in other countries and currencies, as shown in the store you buy from. Taxes may be added where the law requires.
Deleting your own data and your account stays free whether or not you have Pro, and joining a group through an invite stays free. If a Pro plan ends, everything you have stays readable and exportable; you simply cannot add or change data until you renew.
Pro can also be given to an account directly by us, with or without an end date, and we may switch Pro on or off for Spill Cloud. We will tell you in the app before Pro starts to apply to data you already have.
6. Subscriptions, renewal and refunds
Subscriptions bought in the iOS or Android app are billed and managed by Apple or Google. They renew automatically until you cancel in your store account settings, at least a day before the renewal date. Refunds follow the store’s own refund rules.
Subscriptions bought through our website are billed by our payment provider, renew automatically until cancelled, and can be cancelled at any time from your account; cancelling stops future renewals and does not refund the current period unless the law requires it.
7. Self-hosted Spill
Running Spill on your own server is free and is not subject to Pro. You may use, change and share the software under its AGPL-3.0 licence, including its requirement to offer the source of your modified version to the people who use it over a network. If you run a server for other people, you are the operator and are responsible for their data and for telling them what you do with it.
8. Availability and changes
We work to keep Spill Cloud running but cannot promise it will always be available or free of errors. We may change or retire features, and will give reasonable notice of a change that materially reduces what you can do.
We may update these terms. When we change them in a way that matters we will tell you in the app or on the website, and the date at the top will change. Using Spill after that means you accept the new terms.
9. Ending your account
You can delete your account at any time from Settings in the app. We may suspend or end accounts that break these terms or put the service or other people at risk, and will say why unless the law stops us.
10. No warranty and limit of liability
Spill is provided “as is”. To the extent the law allows, we do not promise that it is accurate, uninterrupted or fit for a particular purpose, and we are not liable for indirect losses, lost profits or lost data, or for money disputes between the people in a group. Nothing in these terms limits anything the law does not allow us to limit.
